The most popular temporary dermal fillers are hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers. They are made from a natural sugar molecule found in the body. HA fillers come in different brands, including Juvéderm, Restylane, and Belotero. They are injected into the skin using a fine needle.

Dermal fillers are often combined with other anti-aging treatments such as lasers, chemical peels, and skin needling to reshape the face. For example, dermal filler injection into the underlying subcutaneous tissue (SMAS) augment the cheeks by restoring volume loss due to age or weight loss.

The goal of this treatment is not just filling up lines but restoring a normal contour of the face that does not give away that you have had work done. The same concept applies in cases where there is an underdevelopment of one side of the face of a need to create symmetry.

Dermal fillers can also be used to improve the appearance of “jowls” and the “tear trough” (the area below the lower eyelid that is often accentuated by dark circles).

Lip fillers are used to plump up thin lips and restore lip fullness lost after age-related changes in facial fat distribution.

Injecting dermal fillers into the temples can help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and lines on the under eyes and nasolabial lines. Botulinum toxin type A (Botox) is often used with dermal fillers for this purpose. Botox is a neurotoxin that blocks nerve impulses to the muscles, resulting in a temporary reduction in wrinkles.
